Reading the Bible with Your Non-Believing Friends

There are many non-believing people in our community who think of themselves as religious and are open to having spiritual conversations. The best way to reach them is to simply expose them to the Bible and let the power of God’s Word work in their hearts. You may be surprised how effective it is to read through Scripture with your non-believing friend, asking certain questions along the way.

Here are a couple of resources to help you as you begin to read the Bible with your non-Christian friends:

Taste and See – This is 30-day challenge geared specifically toward non-Christians, and is a non-threatening place to start. The questions applied to each passage are as simple as you can imagine: What is the point of this passage? Does it change how I view God? Or, to put it differently: What does this mean? And what does it mean for you?

Thirty Days: Kick-start Your Daily Time With God – Pastor Chris Gaynor developed this guide to help believers get started on a regular time of prayer and Bible reading. (It pairs well with the Summit’s daily Bible Reading Plan.) The questions he uses for each passage can help you dig deeper with your spiritually curious friend, coworker, or neighbor:

  • What did you learn about God from this passage?
  • What did you learn about yourself?
  • Is there a command for you to obey?
  • What does an exercise of faith look like in this passage?
  • Is there a sin I need to confess?
  • How does this passage help you understand the gospel better?
