W4YW: What Do We Mean By “Focus,” “Grace,” or “Addiction”?

Wisdom For Your Weekend: your weekly installment of things we’ve been reading around the web.

Book Review of the Week

Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence, by Daniel Goleman. Reviewed by Maria Popova. I’ve been wanting to pick this book up ever since I saw an interview with Goleman a couple weeks ago. (This review pushed me over the edge; I just bought it.) Among other things, Focus debunks the popular 10,000-hours-to-genius myth. Logging hours is important, but Goleman helpfully points out that the way we spend our time is just as important. As the title implies, to reach mastery, we’ve got to do something that becomes increasingly difficult in our society—give something full attention.

Articles of the Week

Six Types of Grace, Paul Tripp. Like most beautiful words, “grace” is overused and under-defined, especially in the church. But the answer isn’t to stop talking about grace. Instead, as Paul Tripp points out, we should dig deeper into the variations on this majestic theme. Here are six aspects of God’s amazing grace.

“I Didn’t Have Time,” Seth Godin. Running out of time is mostly a euphemism, and the smart analyst realizes that it’s a message about something else. Time is finite, but, unlike money, time is also replenished every second.”

Do Christians Overhype Porn Addiction? Luke Gilkerson. This is a lengthy article, but a helpful look into our conceptions of pornography use. Should we refer to “addiction” when it comes to porn? Are there other terms that might be more helpful? Gilkerson draws in medical and psychological research to help answer the question. I learned a lot from this. (Cameo from our very own Brad Hambrick!)

Four Ways to Welcome Autism Into Your Church, Sheila Gosney. “Families with autistic children strive to make minor things work every day and make sacrifices most people are unaware of. Their goal is to build understanding with those who come in contact with their children. Some situations can be adjusted, while others just have to be given up. One environment where children with autism and other disabilities should always be welcome, though, is church. Here are four ways you can be a blessing to these precious families.”
