W4YW: SCOTUS on Abortion, Dating an Unbeliever, & Tipping for Jesus

Wisdom For Your Weekend: your weekly installment of what we’ve been reading (and watching) around the web.

Video of the Week

The Book of Jeremiah, The Bible Project. This is a concise and incredibly helpful video on the longest book in the entire Bible. If you know nothing about Jeremiah, this is a perfect start. And if you know the book well, you should be impressed with how they boil it down to 7 minutes. The artwork is pretty remarkable, too. I (Chris) just wish I had watched this before reading Jeremiah this week, instead of after.

Articles of the Week

What Does Your Tipping Say about Your Faith in Jesus? Randy Alcorn. Ask anyone in the restaurant industry, and you’ll hear a consistent refrain: Christians tend to tip poorly. (The most interesting reason I’ve heard for this was the line, “God only gets 10%, so that’s what the waiter should get, too.” Quite a bit wrong there.) As Christians, we should be known for generosity and humility. Let’s live that out when we’re eating out.

What the Hook-up Culture Has Done to Women, Anne Maloney. What has the hook-up culture done to women? Not much good. As Maloney writes, “Women have never been more ‘sexually liberated’ than these women are, or so they are told. They shout: ‘We’re free!’ Yet they whisper: ‘Why are we so miserable?’” This is, perhaps, the most poignant piece I’ve seen on the wounds that our hook-up culture has caused. Sad, infuriating, and powerful.

What the Supreme Court’s Ruling on Abortion Means, Russell Moore. This week the Supreme Court ruled that Texas’ common-sense laws on abortion clinics were unconstitutional. In essence, the Supreme Court has said that as long as a clinic is performing abortions, they don’t have to actually meet health and safety codes. We’ve learned nothing from Kermit Gosnell, it seems. Moore steps in to remind us all that even in the face of a society bent on celebrating darkness, the light of the gospel remains mighty to save.

My Kid Is Dating an Unbeliever. What do I do? Kim Shay. Wise words here from someone who has seen this from both sides. Shay was that unbeliever dating a Christian. And then, later on, she was the mother watching her child date an unbeliever. So she knows whereof she speaks. Listen up, even if you don’t anticipate this happening to you (yes, even if you don’t have kids!).

On The Lighter Side

Girl Gets Head Stuck in Barney Costume, CBS News. As long as there are Barney costumes, there will be Barney costume mishaps. (HT: Kevin DeYoung)

Wisdom For Your Weekend is presented to you by Chris Pappalardo, with occasional guidance from J.D. Greear. This is our attempt to reflect Proverbs 9:9: “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.”
