The resurrection is the most important moment in history, but it is more than an event we remember on Easter Sunday. Join me as I take a deeper look at the resurrection and reveal the ways we should see ourselves in Jesus’s story. Available on @rightnowmedia now.

As we observe two important days this weekend, we want to proclaim that caring for the most vulnerable among us—from the unborn to the under-resourced—is important, because we are all made in the image of God and derive our value and worth from him.

Last night I, along with other leaders, called for the President of the United States to lead in a peaceable transition of power and to condemn the mob that breached our nation’s Capitol Building. What happened yesterday was a disgrace, not only to democracy, but to the ordinance of submission to which God has called us in relation to our earthly leaders. The president has since expressed his willingness to do so, for which we are grateful. We pray that he and his team would lead well in this upcoming transition.

God has called us, his church, to be known as a house of prayer, even when there are no national controversies. We are thankful that God, in his providence, had already called us to begin 2021 by fasting and praying as a church family. Yesterday’s events simply add to our need to truly be a people of prayer. We must call on God to heal the wounds that plague our nation and point our nation to a greater hope than politicians can offer: the reconciliation and healing power of the gospel.

Though we formally start our prayer and fasting on Monday, January 11, we ask you to join us in this prayer as we prepare ourselves:

“God, we commit to pray, not only for our nation and its shortcomings, but for all that you have entrusted to our care. We believe in prayer, so much that we say it comes first, and second, and third. We acknowledge that we can do more than pray, but until we have prayed, we have done nothing of significance. Ready our hearts to fast as a body of believers, temporarily laying aside worldly needs to feast on your goodness and your presence.

We thank you that you hear our prayers and that you answer them. And so we ask for peace and safety. We ask for comfort for the families of those who were hurt and killed yesterday. We ask that our leaders would perform their duties in a way that prospers our nation, cares for its citizens, and brings glory to your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
