W4YW: Honor Your Aging Parents, When a Pastor Falls, & the Beauty of Womanhood

Wisdom For Your Weekend: your weekly installment of things we’ve been reading (and watching) around the web.

Interview of the Week

Would You Attend a Gay Wedding? John Piper. This is a question we get a lot, and one that will be increasingly relevant in the days to come. Many Christians think the answer to this question is obvious. The problem is, they differ on what the “obvious” answer is. Pastor John Piper weighs in, offering his rationale for choosing to stay away. (For more context on both answers to the question, see Matthew Hosier’s response here.)

Articles of the Week

Three Ways You Can Honor Your Aging Parents, Ryan Duncan. One of the more divisive of the 10 Commandments is the seemingly simple command, “Honor your father and mother.” What exactly does that look like? And, more pointedly, what does it look like as our parents grow older? Caring for our elderly parents certainly isn’t a glamorous task, but to ignore it is to scoff at God’s command. Christians, love your parents well in these three ways.

What To Do When a Pastor Falls, Russell Moore. This falls under the category of “wish it wasn’t necessary.” But wishing won’t make it so, and we’re left with the tragic (and tragically common) reality of pastors leaving the ministry because of immorality. It’s natural to respond with sadness, shock, even anger. But what do we do next?

The Beauty of Womanhood: Her Uniqueness Makes Her Essential, Abigail Dodds. The best single line on the internet this week: “The vision our culture offers for women is a sad consolation that exchanges the glory of feminine strength for a treadmill race to nowhere.” This may not be the most practical article you read this week, but it will probably be the most poetic. Let Dodds stoke your passion for womanhood’s glory.

How I Organize My Library, Mike Leake. In many respects, the “J.D. Greear Library” (patent pending) is similar to Leake’s organizational strategy. We lack a “favorite authors” section, though, which might need remedying. We do, however, have a “least favorite” section, which Leake seems to lack. So…that’s something.

On The Lighter Side

Awkward High Fives (Part 2!), Amazing Life. You may have had some awkward “high five” moments, but chances are, none of them have been this bad.

Wisdom For Your Weekend is presented to you by Chris Pappalardo, with occasional guidance from J.D. Greear. This is our attempt to reflect Proverbs 9:9: “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.”
